Bench Work Training Log

The two-week bench work training has come to a successful conclusion. Throughout the internship, I strictly abided by all rules and regulations of the training workshop and followed the arrangements of the instructor. I systematically acquired basic theoretical knowledge and practical skills of bench work. From being completely unfamiliar with bench tools at the very beginning to independently completing fundamental processes including marking, hacksawing, filing, drilling, tapping, threading and assembly finishing, I have achieved tremendous improvements in hands-on ability, detail control and craftsmanship spirit. As the most fundamental trade in mechanical processing, bench work poses the strictest test of patience and concentration. Without the assistance of sophisticated automated equipment, the dimensional accuracy of all workpieces is fully controlled by hands and manual tools. This experience has granted me a profound understanding of the core ethos of the machinery industry: rigorousness, meticulousness and pursuit of excellence. I hereby record the entire process, gains and insights of this bench work training in detail as follows.

At the initial stage of the internship, we first received safety education and pre-job training, which serves as the very first lesson for all mechanical practical training. Safety is the bottom line of production practice. Although bench work training does not involve large heavy-duty processing equipment, the wide variety of hand tools may easily cause cuts, bruises and lacerations once improperly operated. The instructor elaborated on workshop safety codes: all personnel must wear overalls and anti-slip shoes upon entering the workshop, long hair shall be tucked inside work caps, and no ornaments are allowed to be worn; tools, measuring instruments and workpieces shall be neatly placed without random stacking; sharp tools such as hacksaw frames, files and drill bits must be returned to designated positions after use, and horseplay with tools in hand is strictly prohibited; the operating condition of equipment shall be inspected before use, and workstations must be cleaned up and power cut off after daily training. Combined with real accident cases in practical training, the instructor helped us fully recognize the significance of standardized operation, eliminate fluke mindsets, and establish the training philosophy of "safety first, standardized operation". In addition, the instructor illustrated the definition, daily work and industry significance of bench work, enabling us to understand that bench workers are indispensable technicians in machinery manufacturing, equipment maintenance and part trimming, laying the groundwork for the entire mechanical industry.
